For the first time, Bangladesh Council of Scientific and Industrial Research has taken an initiative to pave the way of next generation drug design and development. A five day long training program entitled the “Advanced Training on Next Generation Drug Discovery” had been organized by MMDDL (Molecular Modeling and Drug Design Laboratory), BCSIR Laboratory Chittagong in collaboration with BBCBA (Bangladesh Bioinformatics and Computational Biology Association) at BCSIR (Bangladesh Council of Scientific and Industrial Research), Chittagong on 23th April to 27th April, 2017.
The five day long training program created a platform for a varied group of students, research scholars, industry representatives and faculties etc. coming from different institutes across the Bangladesh to enhance the productivity of their research on computer-based methods in the fields of organic chemistry, medicinal chemistry, biochemistry, or molecular design for pharmaceuticals.
In the training program, the special guests and resource persons were Prof Dr Md Arifuzzaman, Dean, Basic Medical and Pharmaceutical Sciences, USTC; Prof. Dr. Md. Nurul Haque Mollah , Dept. of Statistics, University of Rajshahi & President of BBCBA; Dr. Md Abdus Salam, Scientific Officer, BCSIR Chittagong and S. M. Zahid Hosen, Scientific Officer, Project Leader& Lead instructor, MMDDL, BCSIR Chittagong.
The inaugural program was chaired by Mrs. Mahmuda Khatun, Chief Scientific Officer and Director (In-Charge), BCSIR Laboratory, Chittagong. Habibur Rahman Bhuiyan, Principle Scientific Officer & Course Co-ordinator gave the welcome address in the inaugural session. At the inaugural session, Mr. S. M. Zahid Hosen, Scientific Officer & Project Leader, MMDDL, BCSIR Chittagong; delivered the key note paper entitled the “Computer-aided design: striving towards more rational drug discovery at MMDDL, BCSIR Laboratories Chittagong”. The day was then followed by the discussion, from key discussant by Principle Scientific Officer & Research Co-ordinator, Mr. Monzur Morshed Ahmed who lucidly illustrate the significance of CADD as an emerging, state of the art research area along with wet lab amalgamation towards the successful drug design, development and discovery for future Bangladesh pharmaceutical. Course Director & Senior Scientific Officer, BCSIR Laboratory, Chittagong, Dr. Dipankar Chakraborty also depict the importance of computational chemistry in modern drug discovery; and finally Principal Scientific Officer, BCSIR Laboratory, Chittagong, Dr Mohammad Mostafa articulated in his talk that this is the time of drug design and development rather than discovery by serendipitously where CADD gets the upper hands in arena of next generation drug discovery.
Prof. Dr. Md. Nurul Haque Mollah discussed the main theme of the keynote presentation by highlighting the significance of Bioinformatics and Chemoinformatics approach in Drug Discovery Pipeline.
Prof. Dr. Md Arifuzzaman said recently in–silico chemistry and molecular modeling for computer-aided drug design has gained significant momentum. He expressed his serious interest over the research initiatives taken by BCSIR laboratories, Chittagong in the country and emphasized on the need of this research area that may accelerate the drug discovery process in Bangladesh.
Mrs. Mahmuda Khatun, Chief Scientific Officer and Director (In-Charge), BCSIR Laboratory gave the speech in the Closing Ceremony of the “Advanced Training on Next Generation Drug Discovery”. In her address she said, Molecular Modeling and Drug Design Laboratory is the only pioneer Computer Aided Drug Design platform in Bangladesh and she is expecting collaborative Drug Discovery approach from other researchers and research institutions to develop technology that will vastly simplify and integrate all the processes required to exploit predictive models for drug discovery.
The closing ceremony of the “Advanced Training on Next Generation Drug Discovery” was concluded by giving certificates to the participants.
The training session was actively conducted by under supervision of S. M. Zahid Hosen, Scientific Officer, Project Leader & Lead instructor, MMDDL, BCSIR Chittagong; Raju Dash, & Md. Junaid, Research Assistant, MMDDL, BCSIR Chittagong.
