Antioxidant, cytotoxic and phytochemical properties of the ethanol extract of Leea indica leaf

Description: The antioxidant, cytotoxic and phytochemical properties of ethanol extract of Leea indica (Burm. f.) Merr.,(Family: Leeaceae) leaf has been investigated in the present study. The antioxidant and cytotoxic activity of the L. indica ethanol extract were assessed by DPPH (1, 1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl) free radical scavenging method and brine shrimp lethality bioassay method, respectively. Phytochemical study was done through conducting preliminary phytochemical group tests. Leaf extract showed significant DPPH free radical scavenging effect compared with standard antioxidant ascorbic acid. IC50 value of ascorbic acid and leaf extract was found 1.468 µg/ml and 139.837 µg/ml, respectively. In brine shrimp lethality bioassay LC50 value of L. indica ethanol extract was found 2.4771 µg/ml with 95% confidence limit where the lower and upper limits were 2.2561 and 2.6981 µg/ml respectively, which indicates that the leaf extract has promising cytotoxic effect. Phytochemical analyses were found to be positive for alkaloid, flavonoid, terpenoids and steroid. The present study demonstrates that methanol extract of L. indica leaf has significant antioxidant and cytotoxic effect. This herb shows seasonal and varietal variation in the quantity of secondary metabolites.
